Pink Hexagon Quilt

It's done!  The quilt top has been a WIP for quite some time

Pink Hexagon Quilt, 79-1/2" x 87-1/2"

and it was finished on Sunday night.

I also made some more Sylvia's Bridal Sampler blocks over the last few days trying to catch up to Diann - she's going great guns with her blocks.

I'm missing a photo of Milky Way.  Some of the pieces in these blocks are so tiny and my piecing isn't very accurate - the photos show up too many errors but it's good to "keep it real".  The next lot of blocks to be made will be mainly yellow - there seems to be a lot of turquoise and pink happening and a fair bit of lime green.

49 Blocks so far

I hope to make another 14 or so blocks and then call it quits - I'm not keen on foundation piecing and so many blocks in the quilt are made this way.

Elizabeth and Matt have set their wedding date - 9 February 2013.  Something wonderful to look forward to.

Cutting and Gluing

Miserable day on the South Coast today so a great opportunity to spend some time in the sewing room cutting out some more blocks for Sylvia's Bridal Sampler.

Over the last week or so I've also been cutting out and gluing some pies for my Pies and Tarts quilt - it's almost a year since I made any of these.  They were my lunchtime stitching at work and now that I'm working full-time for the next few weeks and have a one hour lunch break, it will be nice to make a bit of progress on this quilt again.

The travellers are home:  Elizabeth and Matt from France and Jenni from Byron Bay.  All's good in Wonderland.

The rest of the day I hope to spend quilting some more of the white hexagon blocks on the Pink Hexagons quilt.

Hexagons

Had a lovely afternoon yesterday. Karen came to visit and told us all about her new caravan and the adventures she and Bob are planning then I had some time in the garden before going into the sewing room.

I started outline quilting the white hexagons in the Pink Hexagon quilt.


Will take a few quilting sessions to do these hexagons. I've been using the BSR with the foot pedal and it's going quite well. I sewed black/white/grey/red hexies together while watching tv last night. Actually I sat in the sewing room watching "The Pallisers" on DVD because John was watching football. Think I'll put "Seachange" on this afternoon while I'm sewing.

A Change

Some of the quilting has been done on the pink hexagon quilt but quilting came to a standstill on Monday night as I started a temp assignment on Tuesday, which is full-time for 2 months. So far so good and I hope it continues that way. The people in the office are friendly, the office is lovely and it's not too far from home. Not used to the traffic at that time of morning though.

Still need to quilt two of the borders and I'd like to do some straight line quilting just inside the borders in the white hexagons.

Beautiful spring weather is continuing on the South Coast.

Hunky Dory Spin

The last stitch went into the binding last night - 3 nights of tv watching to sew down the binding on this large quilt.  I love the fresh colours.  I used a pattern called Spin Cycle by Cluck Cluck Sew for the block design.

The pink hexagon quilt is now on the frame ready for when I have some time over the next few days.

Yesterday was a lovely day:  birthday lunch for Jenni and Fathers' Day.

Elizabeth and Matt came down.  Still no wedding date but looking more like February as they leave in two weeks for their holiday in France.

UFO

In early 2010 Peg kindly sent me a pattern to make a Hexagon quilt and I went through my stash to find pink, white and red fabric. I ended up buying a few pieces along the way as well. I finished putting the quilt top together yesterday afternoon.


For the border I used a stripe


but I didn't want any of the very dark red and burgundy so I cut them out of the stripe and sewed the stripes back together; I'm really happy with how the border turned out.


I've also done a little more pincushion stitching.


This one by Natalie Bird is ready to sew up.

I've pulled out another half-finished quilt top to work on this afternoon.


Stitching group tonight - think I'll work on my tiny hexagons. Beautiful sunny day and not quite so chilly.

Stitching

After enjoying making the Turtle pincushion so much I've decided to make pincushions for the Tuesday Girls as part of their Christmas presents.  When I visited The Home Patch in January I bought Anni's book "Some Kind of Wonderful" and a little kit for the pincushion - so many wonderful designs in this book.  The stitchery was traced the other afternoon and stitched over the last two nights watching the Olympics.

A nice change from sewing those tiny hexagons.  Continuing the hexagon sewing theme of late, I took out another UFO quilt yesterday afternoon:

This quilt was started over 2 years ago and 6 rows have been added since this photo.  10 more rows are ready to sew on and then I can add borders.

Eisteddfod cooking is finished for this weekend and we are now leaving to set up the hall - looking forward to some great singing over the next 2 days.

Lots of Pink

My blog is looking pinker and pinker by the week and this week's Sylvia's Bridal Sampler block - Laurel Wreath adds more pink.  This was another doozy with lots of set in pieces and Y seams.  I decided to hand-piece this one and the points turned out well but the block is still a smidge larger than the 6-1/2" it should be.  Accuracy is definitely an issue with this quilt.

Sneaky peak at softie finished last weekend for our on-line group's next swap.  She will be flying to a warmer climate next week.

A few strips have been added to the Hexagon Quilt

and this is a filly version of Giddy Up - hopefully John will have some time on the weekend to cut and drill the dowel so I can finish putting it together to give to a little tot when her new baby sister comes home from hospital early next week.

I've been to the pictures twice this week - last Sunday with our family to see "The A Team" (great characters, funny one-liners and as much action as would be expected) and on Wednesday night Jenni and I went to see "Toy Story 3" - as much as I enjoyed this movie, there's no way I'd take small children to see it.  There were children crying in the theatre, which I found upsetting.  Buzz Lightyear's Spanish dancing is sensational.

Slicing and Dicing

I love cutting up fabric and like everyone else starting something new is great (doesn't matter how many other things are on the boil).  I've had the Hexagon Quilt pattern for quite a while and a few weeks ago thought it would look great made in pink/red/white.  While I was on holidays recently most of the fabrics I bought were to add to my stash for this quilt.  The pieces are all cut and ready to sew together.

I want to make the quilt for the qs bed in the guest bedroom so it needs to be larger than the pattern.  Think I'll keep making strips till I've used up the already cut pieces and then decide if it's big enough - can always add a border or two.

Sunday again - time is flying these days.  The day for a new Sylvia's Bridal Sampler block to be chosen.  Very chilly winter weekend (well, chilly for us), so a good opportunity for some sewing, cutting out (softie swap and a filly Giddy Up).
