Log Cabin Quilt Top

At the class with Barb and Mary I chose to start the Log Cabin quilt from their Jelly Rolls Gone Wild pattern.  All their fabrics are such fun, happy colours and designs.  I decided to add borders, mainly because I wanted to use up as much of the fabric as possible (still have quite a few strips leftover).  Sewed on the last border a couple of nights ago.

 

A while ago I ordered some cute dotty fabric to back this quilt - once again the parcel was held up in Customs for almost two weeks.

I also bought a mystery Bonnie and Camille Fat Eighth bundle and some remnants - extra Bonnie and Camille and Fig Tree fabrics are always handy to have in the cupboard.

During the class there were lots of prize draws and I won a charm pack of the girls' Giggles fabrics and we were each given a charm pack of their next range Dot Dot Dash.  I've been wondering what to make with these charm packs and decided to make a small Snippets quilt, designed by Bonnie Olavesen (Cotton Way).

The quilt is made up of two basic shapes:  hourglass blocks (pictured) and half-square triangles.  I think the little quilt will look wonderful in these fun colours.

The stack of granny squares is growing and I've crocheted a few together - just to see how they look.

Had a lovely time on Wednesday with most of my favourite people and have a busy weekend coming up, starting with The Wharf Review tonight - hoping for lots of laughs; Southern Stars tomorrow to watch Jenni's school perform and a 90th birthday party on Sunday.

Big Weekend

After work on Friday evening, Karen and I headed off to Sydney for our weekend workshop with Kellie Wulfsohn.  For two days we were all head down, trying to master the various techniques Kellie has perfected.  We were so busy none of us had much time to take photographs.

On the Saturday morning Kellie explained how she came to making her style of quilts.  Such a pleasure to be able to see Kellie's quilt up close.  Her imagination is endless.  Kellie showed us how she does raw-edge applique, then it was our turn to start our raw-edge applique preparation and the afternoon was spent appliqueing our cushion tops and trying to stitch our branches - sewing over the top of our original free-motion sewing is not easy.

Saturday night a group of us had dinner at a nearby Thai restaurant - lovely food and company.

Sunday morning Kellie demonstrated her quilting.

Then it was our turn to have a go.  Lots of frustration trying to make smooth swirls but Kellie was always on hand inspiring and encouraging us to keep going.

After the lunch break we had to start quilting our cushion tops.  I put it off for as long as possible but Kellie found me out, so I had to bite the bullet.

Finishing time came all too soon.

I looked forward to this workshop for so long and it was terrific.  I was lucky that Karen was able to come along at short notice - we had a fantastic time, met some lovely ladies and came away with some new skills (well, they may be skills after hours and hours of practice).  Kellie is a fabulous quilter, innovator and teacher - her ideas are brilliant.  She has a knack for making our quilting life simpler.

Big Weekend Coming Up

Karen (a friend from work and brand new blogger) and I are heading off to Sydney on Friday night to attend a workshop on Saturday and Sunday with Kellie of Don't Look Now fame.  I've been looking forward to this weekend for so long and have been assured by many (including the Lovely Loz) that the workshop will be fabulous.  Both of us have new sewing machines, so this will be a great opportunity to test them out.

Working on Butterfly Garden block 4 at the moment - seems to be slow going (lots of backstitch in those "patchwork" blocks).  No Sylvia's Bridal Sampler block this week.
